Day 19 of the 365 Nail Art Challenge took me straight to Andy’s room. 🤠Buzz Lightyear and Woody, side by side on one nail, painted completely by hand.
Toy Story is one of those movies that almost everyone has a connection to. Maybe you grew up with it, or maybe you’ve watched it a hundred times with your own kids. Either way, painting these two felt like painting a little piece of childhood.
The Design
The base is a soft sky blue with fluffy white clouds, a nod to that iconic bedroom wallpaper. Buzz sits up top in his purple hood and green suit, and Woody fills the lower half with his brown hat, yellow plaid shirt, and red bandana. I added the Toy Story logo near the top so there’s no mistaking who these two are.
How It Came Together
I started with the sky and clouds so the characters had a background to live on. From there I blocked in the main colors for each character, then went back in for the smaller details like the plaid lines, the eyes, and those big cartoon smiles.
The last step, and the one that makes everything click, is the black linework. I used a fine liner brush to outline both characters, and that’s the moment they stop looking like color blocks and start looking like Buzz and Woody. If you’re trying cartoon nail art for the first time, take your time on the outlines. They do more work than anything else on the nail.
Your Turn
Is there a character you’d love to see on a future day? Drop it in the suggestion box on the 365 Challenge page. The Nail Tribe has already inspired some of my favorite looks this year, and I’d love for yours to be next.
See you next Tuesday for Day 20.
