One nail. One bag. The whole Telfar energy on a single press-on thumb tip. ππ§‘
Day 12 is a format shift. Starting here, I can feature some challenge looks on one nail for one complete design. And what better way to kick off that era than with the Melissa x Telfar Jelly Shopper in Clear Brown.
Telfar is not just a bag. It is a whole cultural moment. The “Bushwick Birkin.” The bag that sold out so fast, they had to invent a bag security program just so people could actually get one. Painting it on a nail felt like the right kind of tribute since I personally own a few and love them all! π πΎ
The Nail Breakdown
The base. A warm caramel marble swirl β chosen specifically to match the amber-brown translucency of the Clear Brown Jelly Shopper. The marble keeps it interesting without competing with the painted design sitting on top of it.
The 3D sculpted bag on top. A fully dimensional mini Telfar bag sculpted and sitting on the nail surface above the painted version. The 3D piece adds the kind of depth that makes people grab your hand for a closer look.
The side-by-side with the real bag on screen behind it was unplanned, but I am so glad it happened. That photo is the whole concept in one image.
The hand-painted logo. Freehand Telfar Logo painted directly onto the nail surface, complete with the circular logo emblem and “TELFAR EST. 2005 NYC” lettered across the lower half. Getting the logo right is the whole challenge with brand-inspired nails. The Telfar circle-T mark has a very specific geometry and at nail scale, every fraction of a millimeter matters.
Creating 3D elements at Nail Scale
As mentioned in the video, I tried this 3D bag out in a larger scale to then create a miniature size in order to get the construction of a 3D Bag, with an opening, on the nail.
The approach I use: paint flat layers of gel on a plastic surface, I used a simple Ziploc bag. As I’m learning more and more about making 3D things, my favorite part is being able to construct anything on a different surface and then attaching it to the final nail using gel. It’s one of the best things about gel.
For the rest of the construction of the bag, I used scissors to cut a slim piece and freeze, glue the strap onto the little bag, and then added the rest of the shaping with 3D sculpting gel.Β
This is also why the practice thumb is such a game-changer for this format. One focused nail, one focused technique, no pressure to keep multiple nail designs consistent at the same time.
